Survey Alleges Voter Fraud At Marquette124 Of 800 Students Said They Voted More Than OnceMILWAUKEE, Updated 1:39 p.m. EST November 14, 2000 -- A Marquette University student newspaper survey found that 124 of 800 Marquette students polled had voted more than once in the Nov. 7 presidential election.
The survey was printed in Tuesday's Marquette Tribune.
One student, who didn't want his name used, said he voted four times.
"I realized it wouldn't be impossible so that's what I did," he said. "I ended up voting four times that day, for myself."
One student reporter at the Tribune said that he finds the survey results unsettling.
"They don't surprise me as much as they depress me," reporter Adam Kirby said. "This is my first presidential election and for the rest of my life I'm going to look back on this and say, 'This was really screwed up.'"
Marquette University responded to the allegations of voter fraud in a statement released Monday.
"These allegations if true, are frankly appalling," the statement said.
One Marquette student has found the news so appalling that he has enlisted the help of his friends to uncover those students who allegedly voted more than once.
"The talk around campus is that some students have been bragging about voting more than once," student Lonny Leitner said.
The Milwaukee County district attorney is investigating fraud allegations on the Marquette campus.
Marquette University told 12 News that they are taking the allegations seriously and are reserving the option of disciplinary action against any student convicted of voter fraud.
